Seasonal Foods can be a budget saver.

So it is apple season in our little valley:)  Yes I know you can always find apples in the store but not like these.
Today we picked 100lbs of warm juicy apples.  We will eat them sauce them and dry them for later not to mention they will store for months in the fridge and this weekend we will pick a 100 more pounds.

So some of you may be wandering what 100lbs of organic apples might cost, let me tell you we paid 15cents a pound we spent 30 min picking and we drove less than 5 miles so all in all I say we got a pretty good deal!

Doing this allows my family to eat organic apples, apples sauce, pie, dried apples and of course a few jars of apple butter all year long for less than $40 dollars.

We also picked up about 20lbs of free apples, I guess when the packers come in if the apple hits the ground they cant pick it up so the owner let us take all the fallen apples we wanted for free.

The things we eat

As we get ready to head into fall I find myself cleaning out the cupboards.  It is time to take inventory for winter and  to find room for the extra bounty of summer.

Time to squirrel away a little extra for when the days are cold, as the leaves begin to change so does the way we eat.
  • I have included some pictures of our cupboards as we get ready for fall.
